What is Extended Producer Responsibility?
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) refers to producers', importers’ and brandholders' legal responsibility to manage their products and packaging after consumer use in the EU countries and Canada. EPR in Canada is often referred to as Product Stewardship.
The key EPR requirements include:
- Registering with an appropriate compliance agency in each region that you sell your products
- Putting in place waste collection and recycling arrangements; in most instances this is done by joining a compliance scheme or stewardship organisation
- Reporting Packaging, Electrical products and Batteries to the relevant agency in each region on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis
- Financing the recycling of end-of-life product packaging, electrical products and batteries, i.e. paying fees based on the amount and type of packaging or products you put on the market
